Conversations in Contemporaneity

Associazione Culturale Civilta' del Mediterraneo
(New York NY)

Brief Description of the Organization
Associazione Culturale Civilta’ del Mediteranneo has been active in Otranto, Salento Puglia since 2001, promoting and curating summer workshops and residencies for international students and artists in the Aragonese Castle of Otranto.

“Conversations in Contemporaneity” is a new residency program in the Castle De Viti De Marco of Casamassella, just outside Otranto, near Porto Badisco and the sea.  Here, 11 visual artists, writers, musicians, archaeologists and scientists, will do their own work and share a dialogue on contemporaneity during the month. The spirit of the residency will be of extreme informality and flexibility, in order to allow all participants to devote themselves to their work with minimal interruption. Two scholars/critics will be on location for a period of 10-30 days each, engaging in shared conversation with the residents, bringing together artistic and scientific disciplines.

Ideas and invention have always inhabited the Castle of Casamassella, from the presence of renowned economist Antonio De Viti De Marco, poet and writer Girolamo Comi, and philosopher Benedetto Croce. This residency program aims to continue the rich tradition within the Castle De Viti De Marco.
Accommodations for participants include private rooms within the castle (with accompanying terraces); two meals a day – five days a week; shared studio space; and regional excursions including: Lecce, Gallipoli, Galatina, and boat trips departing from the nearby harbor of Tricase, among others.
