Art Teachers - Middle and Upper School

Avenues The World School- New York, NY
Avenues: The World School is looking for art teachers for Middle School (grades 5-8) and Upper School (grades 9-12) classes for its Chelsea campus in New York City. In the 2013-2014 school year, the Upper School will have only ninth and tenth grades, adding one grade a year for each of the next two.

Art is an intrinsic part of the curriculum, with work in many different media—painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and photography. Teachers will use a multi-media approach so students learn and continue to display creative expression in many ways. Inter-disciplinary projects will connect art to other topics being explored in the classroom. Art appreciation will also be a fundamental part of the curriculum with visits to artists’ studios, museums, galleries and local parks. Work with visiting artists from the Chelsea neighborhood around the school will be an integral part of their experience.

The art teachers should be creative in the use of age-appropriate technologies, expert in communication with parents of students of these ages and excited to work with children and adolescents and their parents.

Candidates should possess a B.A. or B.S. and commensurate teaching experience of students of these ages, as well as being practicing artists. Studio management, including the use and maintenance of a kiln, are important skills for the teacher. Proficiency in either Chinese or Spanish is a plus, as we are emphasizing acquisition of both languages throughout the school.
