Assistant Professor - Sculpture - Dept of Studio Arts and Art History

Hamline University Department of Studio Arts and Art History invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in Sculpture to begin in the Fall Semester of 2015. Master of Fine Arts degree required; two years teaching experience beyond graduate school and a significant exhibition history required. We seek a professional artist with the ability to teach both traditional and contemporary 3D/sculptural art practices. The ideal candidate will demonstrate dedication, achievement and commitment to teaching and scholarship; she/he will be expected to advance the Sculpture program and foster excellence in our students while teaching courses at all levels. It is essential that the candidate be professional, well organized and have the ability and desire to work with faculty colleagues in Studio Arts and Art History in a small liberal arts department.

Specific Requirements: The candidate will demonstrate the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary shop environment and is responsible for equipment maintenance with the assistance of a part-time student worker. Specialization in a specific medium will be complemented by the ability to teach all levels of Sculpture including 3D and 2D Design, Installation, and Independent Study, courses within the Studio Arts curriculum such as Senior Seminar, and general undergraduate liberal arts courses such as First-Year Seminar. Experience with Video/New Media is an advantage. Background in Art History and a commitment to its necessity in Studio Arts education is required. There will be a total of 6 courses per academic year. This position requires additional departmental/institutional duties such as committee work, student advising and recruitment, as well as demonstrable personal artistic scholarship. 2015 Open Call for Artists Alliance Inc's LES Studio Program. Based in Lower Manhattan and supported by public funds, the LES Studio Program provides free three and six-month residencies to under-represented, emerging and mid-career artists. Artists of all disciplines – painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation, new media – are considered for fully-funded shared studio space in the historic Clemente Soto VĂ©lez Cultural and Educational Center. The Department of Art and Art History invites applicants for a full time rolling faculty position beginning August 2015, pending budget approval. Rank and salary commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities: We seek a candidate who is an artist and an enthusiastic educator with a strong desire to build the program and foster excellence in our students while teaching courses at all levels to majors and non-majors. The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to his or her personal studio practice and program/curriculum planning and development. The faculty member will teach a 3-3 course load for 2015-2016, that includes two ceramics classes (wheel and hand built), two three-dimensional design foundation classes, one sculpture class based on material exploration and one class in the liberal arts core curriculum. Other responsibilities include advising students in the discipline, overseeing and managing the sculpture and ceramics studios and related areas, participating in student portfolio reviews and other duties as specified by the department chair.

Position Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Earned Master of Fine Arts ( MFA ) with a consistent record of active engagement in the discipline. Candidates must demonstrate a broad knowledge of sculpture and ceramics, be able to articulate contemporary, historical and conceptual issues as well as manage the sculpture and ceramics facilities. Minimum 2 years college teaching experience beyond graduate assistantship.

Preferred Qualifications: An MFA in Sculpture with an emphasis in ceramics is preferred. Preference will be given to individuals with evidence of college teaching effectiveness. A commitment to contemporary art practice and good writing, speaking and interpersonal skills are also preferred. Applicants should have a strong interest in foundations level teaching for both majors and non-majors.
